Wellbeing is a buzzword we often hear used around mental health, physical fitness, and nutrition. But one aspect of wellbeing that often gets overlooked is in our sex lives. We all know how important it is for us to exercise, take a mental breather and eat healthily when we can, even if it’s hard to actually put that into practice all of the time.

But how much effort do we put into boosting our sexual education, deepening our emotional intimacy, and focusing on pleasure? (And by pleasure, we’re not just talking about a quickie before bedtime…) In this guide, we'll dive into what Sexual Wellbeing is, why it matters, and we’ll also get into some actionable strategies too.

Thinking about it: What is SEXUAL Wellbeing?

Sexual Wellbeing is a catch-all term which addresses the health and satisfaction of every area of our sex lives including (but probably not limited to):

The Physical – (🎶Let’s get physical, physical 🎶)

The Emotional – (Ever had a cry and a wank? Powerful stuff.)

The Mental – (It is said that “The Mind is the biggest erogenous zone.” It is also said that “Men have two heads, but only enough blood to run one of them at a time.” Help?!)

The Relational (is Relational even a word? Relationships. It’s Relationships.)

Physical

Physically, Sexual Wellbeing means meeting your physical sexual needs. What kind of sexual attention are you giving yourself? What sexual attention are you getting from anyone else? Are you happy with what’s currently coming/cumming your way? What if, for example, you’ve always wondered about Prostate Orgasms, check out our guide here.

Physical Sexual Wellbeing also means all the stuff we got taught (badly if you’re anything like me) at school about sexual health and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Also, erectile dysfunction, or fertility problems. It means knowing how to take care of your bits and being aware of any warning signs that something might be wrong. If you’re wondering about the role of Testosterone in sex check out our explainer here, whilst advice on boosting T levels can be found here.

Emotional

Emotionally, Sexual Wellbeing means you're comfortable with what you want in bed and can talk openly about what you like and don't like. It also means you can have satisfying, healthy sexual relationships. (You might even be comfortable with gently weeping through Barbie.)

Mental

Mentally, Sexual Wellbeing means you have a positive and informed view of sex, without feeling shame or guilt (unless shame and guilt are conscious kinks which you and the people you’re playing with are cool about.) It also means you understand the importance of consent, setting limits, and knowing what both you and your partner(s) need.

Mental health more broadly has a huge impact on sex life too. Ever been stressed at work and your libido evaporates? It’s a thing, it sucks and not in a good way. And the reverse is true too; if you are managing to achieve a chilled out mental landscape you could well find your sexual wellbeing benefits as well.

Relational

In terms of relationships, Sexual Wellbeing means you can talk openly, respect each other, and agree on what's good in bed, (even if you can’t agree on what to watch on Netflix before the chill). It also means sorting out any problems that could mess up your sex life, such as relationship troubles or different levels of sexual interest.

DOING IT: How do we put SEXUAL Wellbeing into practice?

Adopt HEALTHY Habits

Diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices like smoking or alcohol consumption all have a direct impact on your sexual performance and satisfaction.

Do it:

  1. Dietary Choices: Opt for a balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients and minerals. Seeds, Nuts and other omega-3 heroes, like oily fish, prevent the build-up of plaque in arteries to improve blood flow. Garlic and beetroot also keep the circulation and libido strong. Processed and ultra-processed foods, foods high in fat and sugar, and alcohol all hinder sexual performance.
  2. Look after yourself: Cardiovascular health is crucial for sexual performance so exercise regularly. Exercise is also great for mood and helps keep weight down, both of which increase libido, sexual staying power and satisfaction. Regular medical check-ups can help diagnose and treat any underlying issues affecting your sexual wellbeing and screen for STIs, which is especially important if you have multiple sexual partners. Equally importantly, keep your Sex Toys clean. Here’s our tips for doing so.

Get EDUCATED

Knowledge is power – especially when it comes to Sexual Wellbeing. Reading content, watching how-tos, and listening to podcasts will all arm you with the resources you need to develop your sexual wellbeing practice. It’s also useful to understand anatomy, hormones, and how factors like diet and exercise influence your sexual well-being.

Do it:

  1. Read, Listen, Watch, Talk, Learn: Consuming content from reputable sources, attending workshops and discussing what you’re learning with other people can all provide valuable insights into sexual wellbeing. When it comes to improving your sexual wellbeing look out for resources that come from reputable sources, are developed with a deep core of research and those that also emphasise the fun and pleasure aspects of sexuality. Try Something NEW

Life begins where your comfort zone ends. The same applies to your sexual wellbeing.

Do it:

  1. Experiment With Toys, Outfits and Equipment: Variety is the spice of life. While a new “thing” is never the sole solution to a stagnant situation, the well-judged introduction of a new bit of kit or clobber can often take things to the next level.
  2. Try new Forms of Intimacy: From role-playing to sensual massages, from dirty-talk to tie and tease, explore different routes to pleasure. Remember chaps, it’s about the journey, not just the destination.

OPEN Communication Channels

Being open about your desires and issues not only improves your sexual experience but also contributes to emotional well-being.

Do it:

  1. Talk to Your Partner: Discuss your likes, dislikes, fantasies, and fears openly. Make sure your communication outside of the bedroom is working well too. Lack of trust or respect between partners is quite the buzz kill.
  2. Talk to a Pro: Relationship counselling can provide valuable insights into improving communication and specifically your sex life too.

The WARM After-GLOW: Summing up

Understanding and enhancing your Sexual Wellbeing is not a one-off task. It's a lifelong commitment which can result in improved physical health, emotional wellness, mental stability, satisfying relationships, and, of course, a better sex life.

So don't hold back, get in deep: Read, consult, discuss, explore. Sexual Wellbeing could just be your new superpower.
